The Power of Color

This is the first in a series of blog posts inspired by my Quick Reference Cards — simple guides designed to make the wisdom of metaphysical practices accessible in everyday life. As a Reiki Master, I wanted to begin with one of my favorite topics: the power of color.

What Is Color and Why Does It Matter?

Color is light energy vibrating at different wavelengths. Each color carries its own frequency, and those vibrations can affect your physical, emotional, and spiritual state. Over time, humans have developed rich associations between color and our well-being. Different cultures bring their own unique interpretations, but here I’ll share insights from my own study and practice.

The Language of Color

We use color all the time to express emotions: “I was so mad I saw red” or “She was green with envy.” These phrases instantly make sense to us, showing how deeply color is tied to feeling.
Let’s start with the basics:
Red: A color of fire and strength, red brings vitality and passion but also anger and frustration. It’s forceful and hard to ignore.
Yellow: A warmer, friendlier cousin of red. Yellow represents joy, courage, and comfort—sunlight in color form.
Blue: Calming and cooling, blue evokes peace and tranquility, like wrapping red in a soft blanket and giving it time to rest.
Between the primaries are secondary colors that bridge emotions:
Orange: A blend of red’s passion and yellow’s joy, orange carries enthusiasm and creativity.
Green: Sitting between yellow and blue, green represents growth, healing, and balance.
Purple: A mix of red (fast vibration) and blue (slow vibration), purple has long been linked with wisdom, spirituality, and the divine.

Energy & Emotions

Healers often use color to guide energy flow. Reiki practitioners, crystal healers, and chromotherapists may introduce color through lights, fabrics, guided meditation, or visualization to influence mood and well-being.
Colors can amplify or soften emotions. For example, yellow or orange can boost courage and energy, while blue or purple can calm anger and frustration. Science supports this too—studies show that brainwaves can synchronize with external light frequencies, shifting our mental state.
In my Reiki practice, I often closed sessions with a color meditation. I guided clients to imagine a beam of white light entering the crown and shifting as it moved through each chakra:
  • Violet at the crown: connection to universal energy.
  • Indigo at the brow: opening vision and possibility.
  • Blue at the throat: encouraging truth spoken with compassion.
  • Green at the heart: balance, love, and openness.
  • Yellow at the solar plexus: strength and courage.
  • Red at the root: grounding, vitality, and stability.
This simple practice can help anyone bring their inner colors back into harmony.

Practical Ways to Use Color

Color isn’t just spiritual—it’s practical. Changing your environment changes your energy. The walls you paint, the clothes you wear, even the food you eat can shift your mood.
But here’s the catch: no two people perceive color exactly the same way. What looks “red” to me might look “orange” to you. That means discovering your personal relationship with color is key.
A simple way to start: keep a color journal. Collect swatches, fabric samples, or paint chips, then note how each one makes you feel. Does it energize you? Calm you? Make you feel more connected—or more withdrawn? Start with the primary and secondary colors, then branch out.
Once you know how you experience color, you can use it intentionally:
  • Add visualization to your meditations.
  • Use color breathing to send healing into your body.
  • Choose candle, clothing, or décor colors to match the energy you want to invite.
For example: Want harmony at a family gathering? Skip fiery reds and oranges—decorate with soothing blues, whites, and purples instead.

Closing Thoughts

Color surrounds us and shapes us, often more than we realize. Whether you’re choosing a ritual candle, painting a room, or simply deciding what to wear, your choices in color influence your energy. That’s why I created the Power of Color card—a simple tool to help you align color with intention.
You can find these cards at Raven’s Charm in Shelton, WA, or reach out and I’ll be happy to send one by mail. In the meantime, I’d love to know: What color are you most drawn to right now, and how does it make you feel?
